When Gertrud D began painting nearly twenty years ago, it was a natural progression from a life already steeped in artistic expression. From actress on the stage to set and costume designer, to director and producer, making the sideways step to visual expression through painting was both consistent and quite logical for a creative mind that has a deep inner drive to make art.
Since that beginning her work has gone through phases that further reveal her determination and drive for complete expression of her artistic soul. The images on this website show the most important recent work of the last four years, as well as selections from bodies of work from earlier phases of Gertrud D’s transformation. We can see that movement: structure and composition have evolved overt time, but the underlying harmony and integrity remain, intensifying the expression. The newest work has in many ways become more symbolic, densely layered vibrant colors and intricate composition building upon the freer, open style of the earlier work. Being both organic and abstract at the same time, the paintings tempt us viewers to add our own layers of meaning and experience to the richly realized surface and form of these complex expressions. And yet, we can float easily over the luxurious surfaces in a simple exploration of color and emotion. These canvases invite us, indeed entice us, on many levels, where each of us brings as much or as little of ourselves to the experience as we wish.
